Typical misleading CTF hackery. The 8 grand shipping charge also included sending back electronic equipment worth 100k that is being kept. Now maybe you think paying 8 grand is more wasteful than abandoning 100 grand worth of electronic equipment, but I doubt any sensible person would agree with you.
