Health-care Canadian style

Here's yet another shinning example of Canada's "first-rate" health-care system. Just don't get sick out side of regular business hours.

From today's Saskatoon StarPhoenix.

We still blame you. Fund healthcare. Reject CTF's attempts to destroy it.

O the irony, blaming the CTF for socialist incompetence.

Rob, if you're really concerned you should send your provincial treasurer a cheque for how much you think you should be paying in taxes, why wait for the government to ask, go ahead and help them out...I'm sure they would put it to good use.

I have a better idea, Scott. Why don't you move to America where you'll be happy in their every man for himself society. Then you can pay 6K a year for health insurance only to have your insurer cut you off when you get sick.

Remember New Zealand, trumpeted not so long ago by Fraser Institute, CTF types as the cats meow, THE shining example of the free market paradise that would ensue if a laisse faire, privatization agenda were adopted?
From The National Post, Fri. Aug. 16 2002: Auckland* A pensioner chopped off one of his gangrenous fingers with a pair of scissors because he could no longer stand the pain after waiting 20 months for surgery. Ted Matthews, from Timaru in the South Island, carried out the amputation after he learned his operation, scheduled for early Sept., had been delayed another six months.

Maryjane, a finger that has gangrene would cause toxic shock which is an emergency situation. Something's not right about that story, and it could be incompetent doctors and not solely a broken system.

David, Can you point me to how Saskatchewan personal income tax rates have changed since 1991 to now please?

Rob,
Leave it to an NDPer to bring up the states as soon as someone criticizes your uneducated point of view. Just for the record, I lived in States for 20 years. I never once paid $6,000 a year for my insurance. Actually it was a saving compared to what I pay in taxes, Alberta Health, and Blue Cross over here. Had plenty of friends and relatives get sick over the years and not a single one was “cut off” by their insurance carrier. Do you get all your info from Michael Moore or just make some of it up? Canada has a good healthcare system but some private clinics can help ease the load and provide more efficient and timely service. I work in healthcare here in Alberta and have heard very positive input from patients who utilize the private clinics and not a single complaint from anyone who has their appointment moved up because the wait is a little shorter now.

Saskboy....I agree, it could be incompetent doctors and not soley a broken system. Too bad the usual right-wing suspects don't give our system the same benefit of doubt instead of blanket condemnation.

Anonymous, if you listen to the radio CKOM, you'll hear more than just "usual" rightwing suspects saying the system is broken. Way more than 80% of the callers have stories of waits or problems that shouldn't happen in a well working system.

Saskboy... Tabulating the callers to Gormley is hardly scientific. When I say usual suspects, I'm refering to the with an agenda right-wing media gum-flappers, the CTF, the open-mouth yahoos, the business page scribblers, the fraser-howe inst. etc.
Now the above may give lip service to systems in Europe, etc. but they are only enamoured of George W. and the Republican way.

Anon, what's your source of spoken evidence? I don't suppose it would help to mention that I too have been the subject of the "coddle, then kick" method of Sask. Hospitals?

You can't dispute their stories [unless you're saying they are lying], and unless you think that the .1% of Sask that the NDP admits encounters problems just happened to be listening to John Gormley Live this week and were phoning in, then you're deluding yourself that the system is working 99.9% of the time.

It's not about left or right wing. It's about Tommy'd dream to treat everyone whether they had money or not. And now it's so bad that even the people with money aren't getting treated in time. There's got to be a better way than this.

The Liberals and Tories underfunded medicare for over 10 years. Why would I trust them? I know the NDP would restore funding to medicare. No other federal party has promised that. That's why I support them.

Sask.Taxpayers Federation said...

Your right wing parties destroyed our healthcare and dumb easteners and Albertans still vote for them. Why????

stf, seems healthcare is better in Alberta; here in the cradle, all socialism and no freedom makes medicare a basketcase.

There are waiting list all across Canada not just here. You're a poor misguided fool if you believe otherwise.

They are worse here: that's a fact stf! too many of you dependants here, not enough medical professionals!
