Elections by all means. Do away with the lifetime appointments. This "non-partican, sober, second look" spiel is tripe. Make these clowns accountable. Maybe then they will actually show up for work.
Neither, there is a "Third Way", model it after the German upper house, Bundesrat. This would create provincial representation in Ottawa.
Chad: Can you elaborate? The German model sounds interesting... (Yet, i know nothing about it...)
I vote for Abolish, but I am not firmly in that camp - it just seems silly to have two houses elected and respresentative...
Which would be more powerful? Seems like endless headaches...
The big problem I see with the German model is there is no accountability. These people are just appointed hacks (much like our current Senate) of the "province" rather than the fedds. I also note that Wikipedia also denotes most of these people don't even vote on the legislation presented, but use stand-in civil servants.
I stand by my earlier vote of elected. We should not need provincial representation in Ottawa, if the feds can ever get their fingers out of provincial matters (health, education, etc.). Get proper separation of the provincial and federal responsibilities and things will be much better.
I think there is a lot to be said for electing them, even though I can't think of a good situation where and active and accountable senate would have been handy.
Dump it and turn the red chamber into a casino.
I'm an American - elect the Senate to guard against the extremism of populism from time to time.
I believe we've wasted enough time debating the senate thing. We don't need more politicians in Ottawa. We are not the States. We should abolish the senate . That would cut down on beaurocracy and save us taxpayers a lot of money. That would be real reform.
Leave the Senate as it is!
Get rid of it....for a whole alot of reasons, but we can start with this:
About Family Relations in the Canadian Houses of Parliament

I cant't believe at how useless and insignificant the Senate is and at how stupid the government leaders think we are and to make matters worst... we can't do anything about it.
We need to abolish the Senate, definitely.
